Okay, hear me out.

I was thinking about how much I enjoy reading "pretend marriage" fics. You know, the ones where Chakotay and Janeway have to pretend to be married (usually to appease the alien of the week). Then I realised that Voyager is the perfect place to take that a step further. (Is further even the right word here? It's not like children "complete" a marriage or are necessary for it. It's just a different stage of life. But I digress...)

Let's say that Voyager has come across a civilization that venerates the family. They need to meet with some of the leaders to procure supplies (or permission to travel in their space - you pick). To have the best chance of succeeding with the negotiations, their research has shown that they need to demonstrate the significance of "family" aboard Voyager. Unfortunately, while they understand themselves to be a large family, this new civilization takes a more biolegal view. As such, professing the importance of the Voyager family isn't going to work.

Unwilling to risk Naomi, the senior staff comes up with a plan. Turning to the Doctor and Tom, they "create" a child. Tom and the Doctor make a holo-kid that is the believable offspring of Janeway and Chakotay. Using the Doctor's holo-emitter (see, Voyager is the perfect setting for this story because the plot device is already written in!), they take the child with them and thereby gaining the alien's trust and procuring the supplies (or right to travel).

And the bonus to the story is you'd have the perfect opportunity to make Janeway and Chakotay talk about kiddos (in whatever shape or form suits you the most). So why aren't there stories like this? Or are there, and I've just missed them???

When introducing myself, I always find myself at a loss for words. Hopefully, as I get to know you all a little more, you'll also get to know me!

I am a writer (that feels sort of odd to say...). You can find my fics on AO3 under the same name, jellybeansarecool. I haven't been writing J/C for very long, but I have thoroughly enjoyed exploring their relationship and playing out ideas in the Star Trek universe.

As for other Trek, I'm yet to see the complete series of any of them (no rotten tomatoes, please!). Trek has always been my sister's thing (I'd gravitated to Doctor Who and my brother to Star Wars). When I finally sat down and watched it, I found I really enjoyed it. So, I'm slowly working my way through different series and enjoying the similarities and differences between them. I'm not as invested in any relationships (yet) between characters as I am with the Voyager crew (especially not like Janeway and Chakotay). We shall see if this continues!

I'm looking for the evidence here. What do you know from canon that you see as evidence of a ❤❤ relationship that goes beyond friendship?

Or even just evidence that one or both of them had feelings beyond friendship?

This second recommendation is a fic that made me think "where has this been all my life"?! I bring you Time and Distance by northernexposure

Author's summary:

How far does one have to go to find the way back? Set late in Voyager's journey, post-Equinox.

My thoughts:

You know when you read a book, and you just can't stop reading, and if you have to stop the story is in the back of your mind all the time? The kind of story that colors your life as you read it? I read Time and Distance last weekend and it was just like that. A friend recommended it to me saying it's her favorite fic, but at first I balked at the length (11 chapters, 24060 words). I am so glad I started reading it anyway! The story was transcendent and easily among the best fics I've ever read. Northernexposure's beautifully poetic writing is woven into a plot that just keeps getting better as it progresses. Although it has an appropriate amount of angst, I found the entire story fulfilling and satisfying. The depth of feeling made me cry at one point--not from sorrow but from pure intensity. This one is so good it's distracting, and I was so glad I read it after it was completed, because I don't think I could have waited for more chapters to be written and posted. I already want to read it again! It's a wonderful way to spend a weekend or a holiday or, if you must, a few evenings.

I'm a long time J/C shipper but relatively new fanfic writer. My fics are on AO3 under Emilie_786. I'm on tumblr too, Emilie786 there...I just reblog J/C eye candy on tumblr for the most part.

I'm a life long Trekkie so it's easier to tell you what other Trek I don't like *yet*, because the only series I haven't enjoyed is Disco and I only watched a few episodes so I plan on giving it another try sometime. Oh, haven't watched Lower Decks either, but it's on the list to watch as well. As for ships, there's none like J/C!

I'm totally new to Dreamwidth so patience and tips and suggestions are welcome as I try to figure it all out!

Hi everyone! I'm just starting out on Dreamwidth! I'm beginning a series of J/C Fic Recommendations.

For my very first rec, I bring you The Still of the Night by Spengie

Author's summary:

I knew the pull well, the desire to fold her into my arms so strong sometimes I shook with the effort not to. It had been different, once, I remembered.

A short missing scene from Basics I and II. Reference to Resolutions.

My thoughts:

I've read this twice now and it one of those fics that is even better the second time.

Spengie chose to write in first person, which fits this scene just perfectly. Chakotay's perspective allows the reader to see and feel Spengie's painful yet beautiful view of Kathryn Janeway. The insight into both characters, the eloquence use of words, and the setting all combine to create an exquisite look at the foundations of the J/C relationship.

This is 1345 words that captures the heart of their story, both the conflict and the love. A J/C classic for all time.

J/C in Caretaker

Okay, I know there's not a whole lot to go on in Caretaker considering they literally just met and are technically enemies at the beginning, but there are a few points that I'd like to hit on that help establish the basis of their relationship for the rest of the series:

Chakotay is Maquis. He forfeited his Starfleet rank when he joined. And yet, Janeway still calls him "commander" right from the get-go upon first meeting him. This shows that even though they have their differences in opinion, beliefs, and goals, she respects him enough to recognize that he's the commander of his vessel. That he's in charge of his own crew. She knows what kind of responsibility it takes to run a crew, especially considering that Chakotay's crew chooses to follow him, and she acknowledges that by respecting his position.
Running alongside that, Chakotay may have his disagreements with Starfleet as an organization, but he knows most Starfleet officers are good people and he knows what Starfleet values are. So even though Janeway freely admits that she was sent there to capture him and his vessel, he still trusts her enough to beam aboard her ship when she suggests they work together to find Harry and B'elanna.
Basically what I'm saying is: trust and respect were established in their relationship from the very beginning.
Also I just have to throw in this line from B'elanna and Chakotay because it's one of my favorite's:
- B'elanna: "Who is she to be making these decisions for all of us?"
- Chakotay: "She's the captain."

Hello, all! My name is Erin and I'm still fairly new to Voyager.. haven't even finished it, yet, to be honest (but I know how it ends, thanks to Biz). I've always been on the J/C train, since the original run, out of moral support for some heartbroken friends. As I'm actually seeing it, though, I would have been on their side, anyway!

I'm a "recent"er convert to DW, though the majority of my active comms are still over on LJ.. so I still rely on LJ code for everything. :D

( I don't know how to keep it short. True story. )

I'm also one of those damn, dirty Galaxy Quest fans.. so, y'know... you've been warned. :)

Also, FULL DISCLOSURE: Biz is my roommate. We've known each other for ~~almost 25~~21 years. :)
